O'BON Newspaper Wrapped Pencils at Beacon's Big Draw Tonight!

The Big Draw Gala Party on Saturday, January 28th is a night of live drawing, prix fixe art, music, food & drink, an open bar and many more festivities. The Drawing Rally will feature a pre-arranged select group of artists creating 11”x14” drawings while the party goes on around them. Revelers are invited to watch as the drawings are created at tables in the center of the exhibition space. As these drawings are completed, they will immediately be put up for sale on the wall for $75 each.

O'Bon L'Artiste newspaper pencil sets will be provided to the live drawing participants courtesy of Newburgh Art Supply. These pencils are environmentally friendly yet contain high quality smooth leads. The leads are protected from breakage thanks to the tightly wrapped recycled newspaper casing. The sets contain 10 pencils with a range from 2H through 8B.

Tickets for The Big Draw Gala Party will be available at the door on Saturday, January 28th. Ticket prices are $15 each or 2 for $20. Proceeds from the evening’s event will benefit Beacon Open Studios, Mill Street Loft Arts and the participating artists.Beacon Open Studios and The Big Draw are made possible by the sponsorship of the Beacon Arts Community Association (BACA).

We've been carrying a limited stock of Old Wood Studio wood art panels since we opened, but recently we've had a surge in special orders. Apparently the chain art stores are starting to trade quality for their own "house" brands outsourced to that big country in the East. If you paint on wood, compare quality and ask us about our competitive pricing. Old Wood Studio makes Baltic birch faced panels 1/8" thick in all sizes, cradled (on Wisconsin basswood) and uncradled. We recently special ordered some larger panels that were cradled with 2" thick basswood, and braced with 8" corner braces and H middle braces. The workmanship is exceptional. Orders take about 7-10 days as everything's made to order. Our prices are very competitive- we pretty much beat any price out there when you add shipping to other sources' prices- and you can get any custom size you want.

After much research, we have decided to carry BEST Stretcher Bars. There are other brands that are more common, but none that match the quality and consistency of BEST. Bring in a sample of the stretcher bar you're using now and compare for yourself. We just received a large selection of heavy duty bars and have been stocking the light duty successfully for the past couple of months. Ask us about cross bars, custom sizes and quantity discounts.

We expanded our Unison Pastel display by 10 colors and are now carrying Half Stick Starter Sets (16, 30, 63 color). No other soft pastel compares to the buttery quality of these.

We just added triple thick (.130) architectural chipboard in 30x40inches. We also stock the single thickness (.030) and double (.060) in the same size.

We now have parchment paper in a pad and a roll. And a new calligraphy practice pad- and sets of Speedball C-nibs- both right AND left hand versions.

For the summer for the kids, we've restocked our sidewalk chalk and now also carry the super giant size. And we just received a new shipment of O'Bon newspaper-wrapped colored pencils. We've found some more great supplies to inspire...

SpectaFix non-toxic spray fixative for pencil, charcoal, pastel and more. Non-propellant casein spray fix. Ideal for working with children, in indoor non-ventillated spaces, those with sensitivity to propellants(all of us!)

Silhouette Paper.
We found a paper specifically designed for use with silhouetting. Super rich matte black on one side, clean white on the reverse. Cuts easily and cleanly for the finest of details. Available in single sheets 20"x30".

Drawing Pads
Due to the popularity of our 5.5"x8.5" recycled Note Sketch books we also found a larger 8.5"x11" Story Drawing Book ideal for younger children. And to complement our Strathmore Premium Recycled 5.5"x12" landscape sketch pads, we now carry the 8"x24.5" version.

Scratch Foam Soft-Surface Printing Board
Easy block printing now in 6"x9" and 12"x18" in addition to 9"x12". Anyone can do block printing. Using water-based inks or paints you can create prints that look like they were carved from blocks. Just rinse them off to change colors. We carry SUBI Block Printing paper in 9"x12" and 12"x18" sizes- perfect for Scratch Foam.

2nd Annual Smallest Canvas Contest
We're happy to help announce the 2nd year of the Paul Gould Hudson Valley Gallery's very successful World's Smalled Stretched Canvas Painting Contest, Exhibition and Sale. Last year there were over 200 entries from all over the country. The artwork was interesting and the entire full size exhibit fit on a poster!

We're just received our shipment of the 1"x2" canvasses. Exclusive at Newburgh Art Supply will be smooth hand-gessoed versions for even finer details without the canvas texture. We already have a good selection of fine detail brushes- some as fine as 20/0.

Deadline for entries hand-dropped at the gallery is Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 5pm. Mailed entry deadline postmarked no later than Monday, November 16, 2009. Almost a Year and We're Still Growing!

As each shipment comes in, it seems that we have less time to let our customers know. Every request and every suggestion is noted and we've been adding these items to our orders as we go. If you haven't been in the store in the last month, we've increased our variety of offerings considerably.

We've just restocked our oil painting section with the popular Cennini products:
OPTICAL WHITE (a zinc white ground with hollow nanospheres that won't desaturate your colors!) and
CLOVE OIL (add a drop to paint to slow the drying, add to emulsions and glues to prevent mold and bacteria. Wonderful smell that fills the studio!).

We're now also carrying their TITANIUM & BLACK OIL Primer that likewise is formulated with nanospheres for much improved resistance to cracking, and Black Oil that insures a trouble-free surface. This primer is a bright white that dries to touch over a weekend and cures quickly. Neither too absorbant (like acrylic primer) or too slick, the dried surface accepts paint beautifully.

Our Handmade and Decorative Papers are constantly being renewed with new papers every month. Come and see our fresh selection.

For all you pastel artists, in addition to our growing selection of Unison Pastels, we just received some sets of semi-hard Richeson pastels. Also, a very useful tool called a Pastel Shaper that can sharpen/shape your soft pastels and retain the shavings for reuse. To carry all those delicate pastels, we found some great empty boxes with segmented foam inserts for storing and protecting 18 and 72 pastels. We are growing our selection of our ever-popular, locally-produced, nationally-touted UART sanded pastel paper. We've gotten many requests for their mounted sheets on 4 ply conservation board; our orders for this product should be arriving next week.

For hanging your art we carry a full line of OOKS, the best hardware to use on plaster walls without damage. For those doing architectural modeling we now have chipboard. For all your presentation needs we have presentation boards and kits with lettering and headers and foam-core up to 4 feet x 8 feet sheets. Plein air painters, we have many different options for handling your wet-canvases. Erasers of every type and glues galore.

There's a lot of activity going on in our neighborhood- and Newburgh at large- click on our ARTS CALENDAR link on the right and bookmark it. We'll be open 1 year on the 26th of this month. Since then Liberty Street has become a magnet for new and relocating businesses and several more are soon to open. Come out and support local business- we're reinvesting in the local community!

Liberty Street in the City of Newburgh- THE Place to Be!

With the upside down economy, figures the City of Newburgh has other ideas. In today's Times Herald Record is a story about the new restaurant, The Wherehouse, opening later this month two blocks away from our shop. Just last week, Washington Park Florist, opened next door to us at 85 Liberty Street. Mary Lewis' long-awaited cheesecake bakery is finally scheduled to open later this month at 89 Liberty Street. Cafe Macchiato continues to dish up the best authentic Italian brunch/lunch in a warm atmosphere. Habitat's ReStore around the corner on Washington Street has a continually changing stock of bargains- all for a great cause.

Our store is still re-stocking from the holidays and we're always introducing new arts-related supplies. We'll soon be sending out an email about our newest finds. Stay tuned here. We're also about to post some of the great offerings in our souvenir shop, The Palatine Shop.

Holography Magic

Earlier this summer we received a gift from my mentor, Rudie Berkhout, to celebrate the opening of the shop. If you pass by the store after dark- and before we close- you will notice green sparkles of light strewn over the sidewalk in front of the store, some extending as far as the Headquarters. The gift was one of his Novia lighting apparatus that combines the newer portable bright solid state lasers and advanced holographic technology.

Rudie was a world-renowned holographic artist- who Michael apprenticed with for seven years- in New York City. He's known for inventions in the holographic world that even the holographic scientists at MIT were impressed with. His holographic art always tested boundaries of the medium. Some of his imagery spanned over 3 meters originating from a flat surface.

This past summer, we crossed paths again in another realm, celebrating the kick off at the DIA:Beacon of Art Along the Hudson, which now encompasses 7 Hudson Valley cities on the Hudson River. He's been instrumental in Catskill's very successful revival, restoring four buildings on their main street.

He passed away in September.

As they researched innovative products- particularly those that are more environmentally friendly- they were intrigued by Crayon Rocks.*

We are very excited about all the hard-to-find art materials we've been able to purchase- with much research and digging- and our customers' welcome suggestions....

For the serious traditional oil painter we now carry an amazing Grisaille painting set- that exactly matches the Munsell Neutral Gray Scale. From the same company we also have Oil of Clove (add just a drop to paint to slow the drying- wonderful smell that fills the studio!) and Pre-Rafaelite Medium (historically accurate replication of the best of the mediums used by the Pre-Rafaelite painters. Colors stay bright, dries quickly and handles with smoothness and precision.) The kicker though is the Optical White- a zinc white ground with hollow nanospheres that won't desaturate your colors! Check out our sample canvas- you've gotta see it to believe it!

For those delving into printmaking we now have Subi Block Printing Papers and a good selection of inks by Speedball, Letraset and Sanford Higgins. For those working with pastels: a locally manufactured (Spring Valley, NY) sanded pastel paper, Uart, is getting some deserved national attention for its high quality and consistent surfaces. Unlike its better known competitors, this paper is manufactured by the company itself- not a third party- so quality control is better monitored. We're now carrying 24"x36" sheets of the 400 and 800 grit. And don't forget about our continually changing stock of handmade papers from around the world!

For the kids we just replenished our stock of O'Bon newspaper-wrapped pencils and pens, bagasse journals and extraordinary recycled paper folders. From our gleanings of the local big box stores we noticed that none of them carry glue sticks (or glues for that matter) that are non-toxic and kid-friendly. After looking long and hard we found a glue that's been made in Italy since the 1927 called Coccoina. It's totally non-toxic, comes in 3 sizes of glue sticks and a cool can with brush and, as a nice bonus, smells great!

Liberty Street Begins to Buzz with Businesses

CITY OF NEWBURGH — On Saturday, Michael Gabor and Gerardo Castro will open their shop on Liberty Street across from Washington's Headquarters.
They'll have displayed the professional-quality art supplies and arranged the pencils made of newspapers just so. Castro will have decorated the windows with scenes of historic Newburgh.
To the north sits Caffe Macchiato — proof the upscale can draw people to borderline neighborhoods. Two blocks south, boards cover windows of vacant buildings. Broken glass lies on the sidewalks.
Maybe more than any other neighborhood in the city, this one captures Newburgh's dual nature. The mixture of perfect location — short walk to the waterfront, neighbor to a national landmark — and rough edges makes it both an affordable investment and a gamble. Castro and Gabor have wagered it will swing toward shops and apartments rather than burned-out buildings.
"This isn't just people talking anymore," Gabor said. "This is people moving."
As in moving into empty storefronts. Within five months, four new businesses geared toward the coffee-shop crowd are expected to open there. First, there's Gabor and Castro's venture, a three-in-one space that will house Newburgh Art Supply, The Palatine Shop and, in the back, Eric Jarmann's custom-picture frame shop.
Next comes a 2,000-square-foot specialty food market called Moo and Oink Market at Liberty and Washington streets. Andy Nunez said he and his business partner, Spencer Gulliver, plan to sell locally grown produce and meats along with Hudson Valley cheeses and gourmet imports. Nunez said they'll open about Labor Day.
Then there's the Cheesecake Lady. At first, the Cheesecake Lady was cautious talking about plans to move into the spot next to Gabor and Castro because she hasn't signed the paperwork. But she started talking about cheesecakes and, well, she's excited about cheesecake. Her name is Mary Lewis. She hopes to open about the same time as Moo and Oink.
Add Michele Basch's nearly completed plans to open a high-end restaurant with her chef husband, Dan Brown, by late fall or winter at Liberty and Ann streets and, real estate agent Miguel Marquez said, the neighborhood is reaching a tipping point — the mass of businesses needed to drive the redevelopment of the whole area.

Newburgh Art Supply carries all the basics for professional and advanced artists including nationally recognized brands. You can also find student-grade materials that are more affordable, including kits to encourage beginners. They have also acquired a selection of handmade papers from around the globe. So it is fitting that The Palatine Shop, which grows out of Gabor’s passion for collecting Newburgh souvenirs, is located within the Newburgh Art Supply space. Whether a native or a transplant, Gabor describes how Newburgh “becomes a part of you” after spending time here. He recognizes how souvenirs convey a “pride of place” and regularly hears from people searching for mementos, even those who have left many years ago. HOLD GRAND OPENING IN NEWBURGH’S HERITAGE CORRIDOR
A Treat for Artists and Newburgh Collectors

Newburgh, NY, June 2008. Newburgh Art Supply and The Palatine Shop are holding their Grand Opening on Saturday, June 21 from 2:00 – 5 :00 pm at 87 Liberty Street, in the heart of Newburgh’s Heritage Corridor. Co-owners, Gerardo Castro and Michael Gabor, see the shops as filling a need in Newburgh’s burgeoning art community and retail scene, while contributing to the resurgence of the neighborhood, which has long shown promise as a retail and tourist hub. These new businesses will be the first of several key businesses opening in the immediate locale this summer.

Newburgh Art Supply will carry all the basics for professional and advanced artists. They will also carry student-grade materials that are more affordable and good quality, including kits to encourage beginners. The store will strive to carry a growing line of earth-friendly and local products. Examples include pencils made from recycled newspaper and soy crayons.

As an internationally exhibiting professional artist, Castro conveys his motivation “to help young people explore possibilities through art”. The store will provide a place to gain both information and inspiration. The shop’s mission embraces the spirit of sustainability by offering artists a cost-effective and convenient place to buy supplies typically found a distance away. Shopping locally helps the environment and the economy -- it contributes to Newburgh’s vitality as a “walk-able” city, saves gas and travel time, and creates commerce. In addition to seeing artwork displayed in the shop itself, the storefront windows will hold a special treat. Castro sees store windows as “The great hero of image communication – 3-D billboards bolted to the front of the store”. The Palatine Shop, located within the Newburgh Art Supply space, grows out of Gabor’s passion for collecting Newburgh souvenirs. Whether a native or a transplant, Gabor describes how Newburgh “becomes a part of you” after spending time here. He recognizes how souvenirs convey a sense of “pride of place” and regularly hears from people searching for mementos, even those who have left many years ago. The Palatine Shop, whose name pays homage to the posh Grand Street hotel that was razed during "Urban Renewal”, will offer a selection of antique souvenirs along with new ones -- such as postcards and greeting cards by local artists. Among the antique souvenirs is a broad collection of plates with images of Washington’s Headquarters, one of Newburgh’s most visited attractions. It seems a touch of serendipity that the shop's door aligns precisely with the Headquarters’ gate across the street!

Newburgh Art Supply and The Palatine Shop also are collaborating with the talented custom picture framer, Eric Jarmann, who will provide services to artists and the general public.
