Traditional Japanese Papers

We're now carrying a variety of traditional Japanese papers. Sold by the sheet- or roll- these papers are beautifully made. They're strong and versatile. A sample pack of 10 of the papers we stock is available. We have a sample catalog in the shop with a wider variety that can be ordered.

 

Individual sheets:

1. Gampi Smooth (Salago) machine made, 32g,  25" x 37" unsized
     - made in Mino, Philippine
     - 100% Philippine gampi (salago)
     - smooth, absorbent, non-bleeding surface behaves like sized paper
     - ideal for printmaking, calligraphy, pen&ink, drawing and digital printing

2. Kozuke White (Sized) machine made, 44g, 25" x 37" sized
     - 30% kozo, 70% lignin-free wood pulp
     - cooked with caustic soda, internal sizing
     - robust, versatile & economical paper with sizing
     - suitable for water-based media including mokuhanga, relief printing, painting & drawing
     - good introduction to Japanese paper for those not familiar with it

3. Kizuki Kozo Natural (Sized) handmade, 43g, 24" x 39" sized
     - 100% Thai kozo
     - 4 deckle edges, handmade
     - cooked with caustic soda, colored with direct synthetic dye for consistent 'natural' tone
     - made with light internal sizing
     - ideal for water-based media including mokuhanga and watercolor painting

4. Nishinouchi Seiki B Nakaban handmade, 55g, 13" x 18.75" unsized
     - 100% Japanese kozo
     - 4 deckle edges, handmade
     - fiber is sunlight & mountain stream bleached, cooked in soda ash, dried on stainless steel
     - strong paper with natural tone
     - suitable for conservation and all art media

5. Oguni Snowbleached Kozo handmade, 26g, 25.5" x 39.5" unsized
     - 4 deckle edges
     - yukizarashi (Japanese term for snow bleaching); the kozo is
       laid out on snow for several hours each day over the course a
       few weeks
     - cooked with wood ash, dried on stainless steel
     - beautiful, traditionally-produced paper that will outlast our
       great-grandchildren
     - great for chine collé, drawing, layering

6. Seichosen Kozo Yotsuban, 50g, 29" x 40" unsized
     - 4 deckle edges
     - sunlight & mountain stream bleached, cooked with lime
       dried on traditional wooden boards
     - produced in Kochi
     - excellent for all media; favored for woodcut, sumi-e, shodo
       (brush writing)

7. Kawairi Chiri machine made, 32g, 25" x 37" unsized
     - 70% kozo, 30% sulphite
     - chiri means 'left over' and refers to the dark flecks of outer bark of the kozo plant
       which are added for decorative effect
     - very smooth surface is good for drawing, printmaking, bookbinding and collage

8. Unryu White Kozo, 25g, 24" x 38"
     - decorative tissue with kozo fibre inclusions
     - unryu means 'cloud dragon' and refers to the swirling effect of the unbeaten kozo fibre
     - excellent paper for mixed media, collage, relief printing and wrapping

Tissues:

1. Mitsumata Tissue Heavy handmade, 22g, 22" x 27.5" unsized
     - 3 deckle edges
     - cooked in slaked lime, board dried, produced in Okayama
     - two sheets layered together to make double-thick paper;
       produced as a wider sheet and then cut in half
     - used in Japan for backing gold leaf
     - mitsumata considered to be the "feminine fibre", softer and
       more pliable than kozo; takes twice as long as kozo to grow
     - good for chine-collé, drawing, layering; absorbent without
       bleeding or feathering

2. Mitsumata Tissue Light handmade, 11g, 22" x 27.5" unsized
     - 3 deckle edges
     - cooked in slaked lime, board dried, produced in Okayama
     - made as a double wide sheet and then cut in half
     - used in Japan for its warm tone in backing gold leaf
     - mitsumata called the "feminine fibre", softer & more pliable
       than kozo; takes twice as long as kozo to grow
     - beautiful for chine-collé, drawing, layering; absorbent
       without bleeding or feathering

3. Gampi Silk Tissue machine made, 12g, 12" x 18" unsized
     - 100% Philippine gampi
     - cooked with caustic soda
     - absorbent; ink will bleed through next layer
     - slight feathering
     - high degree of shrinkage when wet and then dried creates interesting texture
     - smooth surface good for chine-collé, drawing

4. Tengu-jo Tissue machine made, 12g, 25" x 37" unsized
     - 60% Japanese kozo, 40% Abaca(Manilla Hemp)
     - cooked with caustic soda, bleach, produced in Kochi
     - conservation tissue for repair
     - takes color well and may be dyed or painted
     - ideal for layering in collage and for chine-collé
